Culture is seen as “the way we do things around here”. It might not be the most technical explanation, but certainly sums up why culture has such a big impact on organisational performance. It is an issue MD’s can struggle to get to grips with, as many of the issues that surround culture are deep rooted in history.

For organisations that have a negative Culture, they will experience many of the following symptoms:

Employees doing the bear minimum

Staff not contributing ideas

High percentage of staff using up their sick pay

Poor cooperation between departments

A tense and unproductive working environment

High staff turnover

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many other symptoms of an organisation suffering from culture issues. As already mentioned, many of these issues are deep rooted in history…more often than not problems arise from poor leadership which then cascades down the chain of command. This is why Culture Change can be a sensitive issue as it involves Senior Management admitting there are clear problems within their organisation – we know from experience this is not always straight forward, but it is the first step on the path of building a productive organisational culture.

So how do you know if Culture Change is needed? Well, it’s usually pretty obvious if an organisation is having problems, but identifying where the problems are coming from is not always so obvious. Ithaka Leadership Development has been using a new tool, the Amici culture tool is an online questionnaire that measures culture within teams, departments and entire organisations. This allows Ithaka to analyse, identify, plan and implement a strategic plan to get the results required .

If you would like to measure the culture within your organisation, call us on 0845 496 4548. Having the right culture will improve productivity, motivation and overall organisational performance. For those with under 250 employees in England, there maybe £2000 match funding for growing your business…just ask a member of our team for further details.
